March 30, 1916

Son,

Do not give up on your passions because of a dying old man. I will be fine here in Iowa. I would love for you to come visit but right now, the thing that would make me most happy is seeing you happy on the baseball diamond.

It is difficult to explain my actions to you. You are young and have no family yet. Someday, when you have a son of your own, you will understand my position on all of this. But I admit that my desire to see you happy has blinded me to what really does make your life meaningful. And if that is baseball, then you should play baseball.

You said that, "you couldn't be in Boston..." Why are you in Boston? I thought you were back in New York.

Love,

Your Father
